I Almost Died.

Read or watch Randelle’s story as she reflects on how an old trauma caught up with her at an inopportune time and how she recalibrated back to a safe reality.

While hiking on our summer vacay, we came up on a rock face that called for a vertical climb. Halfway up I FROZE, locked in fear I had a full-on panic attack. Despite being a mere 8 feet above the ground, my brain was CONVINCED I was going to DIE, stopping me dead in my tracks.

This isn’t the first time I’ve become snotty and hot with tears at “great” heights, and it may not be my last. I’m learning I have “fall energy” in my body, likely leftover from a bad tumble I took as a kid. Even though I survived that fall back then, my brain remembers it as a near-death incident and remains on the look-out for similar life threatening scenarios.

How did I recalibrate?

God bless my partner and his saint-like patience, he acted as my life-line: reminding me to look around and re-orient to where I was before asking what felt possible – keep climbing up or return to the ground?

Opting for the latter, I made my s-l-o-w descent. Once on solid ground I cleared a few hard breaths, jumped up and down, let out a good laugh before replotting my path and climbing back up!

In REFLECTION, I can tell this fall energy doesn’t only catch up with me in the mountains. It’s with me in the climbs I attempt in my personal and professional life. Only the RISK isn’t falling, it’s FAILURE. And the FREEZE STATE looks like perfectionism, procrastination, analytical paralysis. (Hot, snotty tears stay the same)

SHIFTING STATE: By RECONNECTING to how I feel and asking what my body needs, I can intuitively mobilise stuck.stored.stagnant energy, making new heights feel possible, freed from old pains and fears.
