Calgary

Tom Short, President, has been an integral part of the Calgary marketing and advertising community for the past 15 years. Tom is the founder of Idea Machine, which he grew from a two-man startup to one of Calgary’s top agencies and one of Canada’s premier web development companies prior to merging with Rare Method in 2003 . A branding and internet expert, Tom has been a guest speaker across the country on marketing trends and issues. As a leader in the industry, Tom has served as the Chair of Calgary’s Ad Rodeo and sits on the board of several organizations.

Nick Noronha, Chief Financial Officer, has broad experience and expertise in corporate finance, financial reporting, internal control and corporate income tax. Following completion of a Bachelor of Management degree from the University of Lethbridge and then achieving his Chartered Accountant designation, Nick spent five years working with a vast array of clients in varied industries at a medium-sized CA firm; this gave him vital hands-on experience of the unique challenges facing professional service firms in Calgary. Since moving to Rare Method from the oil and gas services industry, Nick has provided leadership and expertise not just on the financial side but also in helping to foster the Rare Method ideals of great people, great personalities and great talent.

James Waddock, Chief Operating Officer, has been involved as a shareholder and advisor to Rare Method dating back to the company’s inception. With an MBA from the Queen’s University School of Business, and a wealth of experience in marketing, information technology, and business development, James brings a broad range of business expertise to Rare Method.James has played key roles in many notable western Canadian companies, including Webcore Labs, Jiffy Networks, Tefina Technologies, Shaw, and Telus. James is pleased to offer his knowledge and support to entrepreneurs by acting as an advisor for numerous technology start-ups.

Salt Lake City

David Blain, Executive Vice President, Business Development, supervises the Salt Lake City account service and media teams and leads the strategic direction of all client business. David began his career in Los Angeles, where he worked on Sea World of California and Hughes Aircraft account teams. From there, he moved to Salt Lake City to work in a variety of account management positions including Senior Account Supervisor and strategic leader on the WordPerfect/Novell, InFocus Systems, Intel SPG and Iomega account teams. In 1995, David co-founded B/O/W/G with Jeff Olsen, Eric White and Travis Gurr, and in 2007 merged with Rare Method. In May 2005 B/O/W/G was recognized by Advertising Age Magazine as one of the Top US Agencies.

Jeff Olsen, Chief Creative Officer, has a passion for brand building and knows how to make smaller clients look big and big clients look personal. A creative director and co-founder of B/O/W/G, he also had stints with Cole & Weber, Publicis, EuroRSCG, Bonneville Communications and Richter 7. Jeff has guided creative development for brands such as Intel, 3M, Ticketmaster, Sundance, the 2002 Salt Lake Olympic Bid Committee, 7UP and United Way. His work has received honors from the pinnacle of the advertising profession, including awards from The One Show, the CLIOs, Communication Arts, GRAPHIS, PRINT, the ATHENAs, New York Film Festivals, the OBIEs, International Mobious Awards and The National ADDYs. In addition to his creative accolades, Jeff's has been named as an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Finalists, has appeared on the Inc. 500 list of America's fastest growing companies and has been named as Utah's Advertising Professional of the Year.

Eric White, Executive Vice President and General Manager, is dedicated to a creative product which is strategically sound and creatively innovative. This makes him ideally suited to guide the artistic vision of Rare Method, Salt Lake. Eric has received honors from citadels such as The One Show, The Addy Awards, Communication Arts, Print, the Tellys and the Mobius Awards. But he gets real-world results, too. Readership studies, focus groups and client sales curves all attest to his ability to craft effective advertising, and to get inside the head of his audience. Eric has deep travel and tourism experience, working for clients like Snowbird, Sundance, Cordillera and Visit Salt Lake. He also has considerable technology experience with industry leaders such as Intel, Novell, Micron, Telcordia and 3M.
